Carousel Institute of the Arts Residency- Poolsbrook Farm, UK- 2018
These images portray a live performance during an art residency at Carousel Institute of the Arts in Poolsbrook, England. During this residency I assembled a makeshift loom from a metal frame and collected found objects and recyclable materials to weave a textile: alpaca fur, discarded ribbons and threads, bells, and pink plastic hay bale wrapping. I wove this ritual garment, then wore it as a cape while performing from atop a two-story pile of hay bales in a field during the annual autumn gathering at a working horse farm. For my ritual performance, I invited participants to whisper secrets to me through a horn, things that they wanted to get rid of.
Atop the haybale, swirling the woven cape in the wind, I inhabited the character of the oracle and released the communal secrets through abstract wailing chants that echoed across the fields. The performance continued, as I embodied a snail-like woven creature that hid in crevices, observing, a curious wizened crone character who interacted with unsuspecting audiences throughout the durational performance.
