Second in a four-painting study on the sensations of wind — this one is the vortex: the joyous rupture lapping at your skin, scattering everything. Leaves in motion, the witchy woods, gnarled bark in filtered damp light. A swirl of autumnal ephemerality, hidden inner landscapes.
As I worked on this piece I kept coming back to a particular scene in Hamnet, of a zoomed out view of wind rushing and singing through tangled leaves, an insistent swirl hovering and quavering above the black void.
Here the wind emerged as a hidden face, as a sucked in breath, as a wild howl, as secret dancing figures (Bulgakov & Goethe's witch's dance, medieval marginalia, lepidoptera, a fire creature, my cat). Tunnels of summer light receding as time barrels onwards towards winter.
