performance.
the twins of horae: sara sun-moon and sara moon-sun

Kallidromiou Laiki Agora (Athens, GR)
& Waking Life Festival (Crato, Alentejo, PT)
18-23 June 2025

The two of us Sara’s (Sara Cowdell and Sara Rosenthal ) loop around the lake, enacting roaming interactive performances as we channel cycles of time.

We are the clock, {A} clock, and we traverse the lake at 3’s, 6’s, 9’s, and 12’s, with the sound of a chime.
The lake performs its circles on us as we circle the lake. We collect crowds and followers in spontaneous processions~ Eruptions. We interrupt, invite, ignore, call out, silently push. Time follows its own course, and no one can see inside the mind of the clock. But we can! We are Sun-Moon Sara and Moon-Sun Sara.
Our cycles run with moods and the environment; we channel Dionysian revelry and bring Apollonian order, just like the ancient Horae. [Daughters of Chronos, observing the hours of rest, of play, of gymnastics, of feasting, of pleasure, of libations, of bathing].
We are inverted commas, the light in the dark and the dark in the light (we are both switches).

We wear costumes: fabulous yet folksy/grungy, our faces partially obscured.
Our movements are informed by time’s movements- forwards facing backwards, backwards facing forwards, the hora circle dance [but make it queer]. Troubadours, traveling bards, playful, preening, prancing// Introverts, serious souls, moody ritual proceedings.

We are both sides of the coin, and when you toss it up in the air we spin and spin and spin and reflect the light, off the lake, right back at you.

Drawing on mythological interpretations of time (the Greek horae, Maori matariki) and Greek folk dancing, the Saras created a costume factory, then paraded through the Saturday farmer's market, the Laiki Agora on Kallidromiou Street, right outside the Argo Annex doors.

We danced with Yorgos and the local musicians, we were fed cherries and candies, we were lauded and smirked at. We shimmied and marched, twirled and twinkled our bells, paraded past potatoes and fish.

"IT'S the Moon"
(21:00-00:00)
Waking Life circulation 02: DAY
the Procession
we march around the lake, silvery, golden, glittering, sparkle spangle
it is HOT
we march slow, wave our banners and flags, wade into the water

we stand proudly, the prows of the ship (a people-powered raft, people see us being pulled across the lake form the other shore, we are like some big hazy sequins in the distance)

Circulation 03: DAWN
bells chime for the SUMMER SOLSTICE Saturday

moon leads sun past misty all night revelers, sun crawls across the bridge ( a type of portal ), on her knees, dawn approaching
hourglass turns, cups clank, chandelier dewdrops sparkle...early scent of lavender and sage, two worshippers bend down in reverence, silent agreement

milkmaid moon whispers past The resting...in their hammocks they snooze and snore
cloaked cold sun shivers on shore of lake, not yet unveiled, gold nose shimmering beneath cloud cover of early early morn
